Kidney Infection

Our body is made up of many systems that co-ordinate in a unique way to perform their roles. The urinary system is one among them. If consists of the kidney, ureters, urinary bladder and the urethra. Men have an additional prostate gland. The kidneys are located under the diaphragm, on either side of the middle back. Its primary functions include filtering of waste products from the body, maintaining blood pressure and the normal concentration of electrolytes in the body. These waste products along with water form the urine which passes through the ureters, the thin tube-like structures that connect the kidney and the bladder. Urine is then drained in the urinary bladder and then passes to the urethra from where it exits from the body.

Thus, kidney infection belongs to the family of urinary tract infections. When it affects the urethra, urinary bladder or the prostrate then it will be called as the lower urinary tract infection and the infection of the kidney is called as the upper urinary tract infection. Kidney infection can also be termed as pyelonephritis.

Kidney infections are one of the common infections and about 40% of women and 10% of men can be affected. It can be found in children too but the diagnosis in them will be very difficult as the symptoms are not easily recognizable.

There are two types of kidney disorders that can occur which might cause kidney infections. They are the glomerulonephritis and pyelonephritis.
